Ties that Bind, 2020
United States flag woven with mini flags of other countries that use red or white in their flag, gold-tone flagpole, pedestal, found objects (bronze Statue of Liberty figurine, astroturf, picket fence).

I am fascinated by “American” pop culture, patriotism, and the ever-changing manifestations of these belief systems. In 2018, I began working with US flags, after noticing America’s changing relationship with its national symbol. This change seemed to correlate with a rising commodification of the image of the US flag, and use of the flag as propaganda or prop, becoming increasingly divisive, or correlated with a jingoist contempt toward immigration.
It stands in company with a movement of American artists who have created alternate or altered US flags, with the goal to expand the dialogue in defining “America.”
This work specifically aims to create dialogue about the “ties that bind,” or unify us, as Americans. The flag suggests that we are all immigrants, woven with origins of many countries (these flags embodying just a sampling), and that astonishing diversity, is what makes America great.
