Drawing from contemporary popular imagery and historical narrative, I create seductive images that refine the onslaught of visual clutter. My current work hacks and manipulates existing children's imagery in order to investigate prescribed notions of glamour, virtue, power, innocence, and gender.
These humorous, yet acute studies are originally drawn from an extensive variety of toy rubbing plate sets which depict familiar and influential children's characters ranging from cartoons heroes like Superman, miscellaneous monsters, aliens, Disney princesses and Barbies, or movie characters like Jurassic Park. These assorted embossed plates act as an instant graphic printmaking tool, allowing me to lift and fuse imagery and produce frottage sketches. These first draft montages are further generated into large-scale oil paintings, the scale of which, reflect the grandeur of advertising while questioning contemporary iconic or banal imagery.
Through play and mischievous exploration, I have found a venue for both amusement and conceptual creation. It is liberating to create new characters; hybrids of feminine and masculine, animal and artificial, then situate them within historical allegory, or create my own mythology.
